Life10 ENV/IT/000400 "New Life" is a project, co-financed by the European Union, to test the effectiveness of the reconstitution technology to counter the soils desertification. The reconstitution is an innovative technology, patented by the company mcm Ecosistemi, that allows to restore degraded soils through chemical-mechanical actions in order to produce reconstituted soils with excellent agronomic qualities. The test described herein investigates how reconstituted soils affect the emergence speed and roots development of Zea mays L. seedlings, in comparison with a natural degraded soil. The test was set up in greenhouse conditions and 200 seedlings were daily monitored up to the 16th day after the seeding, when the majority of the plant reach the V2 stadium. After 16 days from the seeding, the emergence percentage was 98% on reconstituted soils and 91% on natural ones. On reconstituted soils the emergence percentage was 90% after 6 days from the seeding, while on natural ones the same value was reach the 12th day after. Concerning the root development, average length root was higher in plants on natural soils, while average root weight was higher in plant of reconstituted one; for the latter ANOVA test provided was significance.
