Natalino Sapegno and Gaetano Trombatore are two of the most important Italianists of the 20th century. The study of their unpublished correspondence is interesting in many ways: it sheds light on the events of their lives; on the progress – sometimes meeting strong opposition – of their academic career; on the relations with other intellectuals, from Benedetto Croce to Luigi Russo; on the principles of their literary criticism, such as the balanced attitude of the critic or his affinity to the writer. On the whole, this correspondence is a monument to the ethics of the intellectual work.
