This article puts forward two hypotheses. The first is the practice of observing the ‘every day of others’ through social media resume and prolong a broader and older social practice already embraced by modern cinema: the ‘watching life going by’. The second hypothesis is that the analysis of this practice and thus of social media micro- or nano-discourses requires the development of a socio-semiotics of temporal updating as distinct from and complementary to an already established analysis of narrative temporal reasoning
