Propter Dei amorem. Fondazioni monastiche e reliquie nel regno longobardo

The essay presents the monastic foundations of the Lombard era in the kingdom and in the duchies. In particular, three main issues are explored: the causes that led the Lombards to support monastic institutions and to create new ones; the legislation of King Liutprand regarding female monasticism and the theft of the relics of Saint Benedict by the monks of Fleury. Regarding this last aspect, the value of the testimony of Paul the Deacon and the story of the Historia Langobardorum regarding the documentary origins of the entire story is highlighted.

Nel saggio si presentano le fondazioni monastiche di età longobarda nel regno e nei ducati. In particolare, vengono approfondite tre principali questioni: le cause che hanno portato i Longobardi a sostenere le istituzioni monastiche e a crearne di nuove; la legislazione del re Liutprando riguardo al monachesimo femminile e il trafugamento delle reliquie di san Benedetto da parte dei monaci di Fleury. Riguardo a questo ultimo aspetto, si evidenzia il valore della testimonianza di Paolo Diacono e del racconto della Historia Langobardorum riguardo alle origini documentarie dell’intera vicenda.
