Born in the Aquitaine, Paulinus of Nola is one of the most unique figures of monasticism between the 4th and 5th centuries of Western Europe. Expression of the highest Gallic-Roman senatorial aristocracy, after a brilliant political career, he decides to sell his assets and give them to the poor. With his wife Therasia he moved to Nola, where in northern suburbium he started his ascetic experience near the tomb of Saint Felice. Retreat to an isolated place, fraternal life of prayer and sobriety with a community of friends, the study of the Holy Scriptures, the choice of chastity, the evangelical poverty, the charity for the poor, the pastoral assistance and the care of the sanctuary with the relics of the martyrs, together with the relations with the major ecclesiastical personalities of the time, are the central features of his story, on which the study focuses.
Originario dell’Aquitania, Paolino di Nola è una delle figure più singolari del monachesimo tra IV e V secolo in Occidente. Espressione della più alta aristocrazia senatoria gallo-romana, dopo una brillante carriera politica, decide di vendere i suoi beni e darli ai poveri. Con la moglie Terasia si trasferisce a Nola, dove nel suburbio settentrionale avvia la sua esperienza ascetica nei pressi della tomba di san Felice. Il ritiro in un luogo isolato, la vita fraterna di preghiera e di sobrietà con una comunità di amici, lo studio delle Sacre Scritture, la scelta della castità, la povertà evangelica, la carità verso i poveri, l’assistenza pastorale e la cura del santuario con le reliquie dei martiri, insieme alle relazioni con le maggiori personalità ecclesiastiche del tempo, sono i tratti centrali della sua vicenda, su cui si sofferma lo studio.
