In its judgment in case C-646/21, the Court of Justice of the European Union clarifies that women who, during a stay in Europe, have developed an identification with the principle of gender equality may constitute a specific "social group" for the purposes of obtaining protection. Furthermore, through the application of the Istanbul Convention, the Court specifies the rights inherent in the principle of gender equality and concludes that the failure to recognize such equality may constitute a form of persecution.
