The Russian language has at its disposal many functional words which influence communication both in an explicit and in an implicit way. The present paper illustrates their relevance in argumentative dialogue. In particular, it will be demonstrated that these functional words are extremely important for they may establish contact between speakers, report external points of view, and point out shared knowledge or state of facts, inter alia.
