Our work represents an initial exploratory analysis of how machine translation tools render the pragmatic-textual dimension of a russian source text in an italian target text. Specifically, we analyzed the automatic translation of some Russian discourse markers into Italian (ved’, vdrug). In cases of non-language-specific functions and regular translational equivalents, the marker is rendered in machine translation, but there is a restriction in the repertoire of translations compared to human translation. When the marker is language-specific to only one of the languages and there are no regular translational equivalents, the machine translation does not render it and simply mimics the original. The limited ability of machine translations to reformulate using both syntactic and lexical transformations, typical of translation from Russian to Italian, is clearly evident.

Abstract
Our work represents an initial exploratory analysis of how machine translation tools render the pragmatic-textual dimension of a russian source text in an italian target text. Specifically, we analyzed the automatic translation of some Russian discourse markers into Italian (ved’, vdrug). In cases of non-language-specific functions and regular translational equivalents, the marker is rendered in machine translation, but there is a restriction in the repertoire of translations compared to human translation. When the marker is language-specific to only one of the languages and there are no regular translational equivalents, the machine translation does not render it and simply mimics the original. The limited ability of machine translations to reformulate using both syntactic and lexical transformations, typical of translation from Russian to Italian, is clearly evident.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
