The article presents university service-learning as a practice characterized by a profound transformative potential, the realization of which, however, requires specific conditions. Service-learning with university students can in itself transform teaching and learning, yet for a constant and systematic proposal the university needs an investment at multiple organizational and institutional levels. The institutionalization of service-learning calls for integrating values, logics and processes of the mission of the university itself, in particular with regards to its relations with territory and communities. Finally, the profound assimilation of the logic of service-learning implies the involvement of all components of the academic community, especially faculty, on whom, however, numerous transformative effects deriving from participation as serving learners have been demonstrated.

Il contributo presenta il service-learning universitario come pratica caratterizzata da un profondo potenziale trasformativo, la cui realizzazione, tuttavia, presuppone condizioni molto specifiche. Il service-learning realizzato con gli studenti universitari può di per sé avere una forte valenza formativa e trasformativa della didattica, ma una proposta costante e sistematica da parte dell’università richiede un investimento a molteplici livelli, organizzativi e istituzionali. L’istituzionalizzazione del service-learning sollecita l’integrazione di valori, logiche e processi propri della mission dell’università stessa, in particolare nei suoi rapporti con il territorio e con le comunità. L’assimilazione profonda della logica del service-learning implica anche il coinvolgimento di tutte le componenti della comunità accademica, in particolar modo i docenti, sui quali peraltro sono dimostrati numerosi effetti trasformativi derivanti dalla partecipazione come serving learners.
