The essay traces the experience of Daniele Comboni, highlighting his relationship with the environment of Brescia origin, characterized by a Catholicism with a strong social and missionary imprint. It is here that he faces his first formation and comes in contact with missionaries in Africa through young Africans hosted in a religious institute. After a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, he began his African experience in South Sudan, where he revealed a "humanized" approach with local populations, far from the racist visions linked to the colonial phenomenon. His narratives of this "humanized" Africa reach Brescia through his correspondence with family members and religious and secular personalities, helping to mitigate the impact with an African otherness dominated by pseudoscientific classifications and prejudices on the alleged racial inferiority.
