The article presents an analysis of Renato Poggioli’s poetic translation of the first Winter Sonnet by Vyacheslav Ivanov. The research was carried out on the final version of the text and on three earlier variants of the translation (a literal translation and two poetic versions). The analysis of the changes inserted by Poggioli shows the translator’s attention for the form of the text: its iambic rhythm is echoed within traditional Italian hendecasyllables, its rhyming scheme is reproduced, and its frequent alliterations are mimicked. Furthermore, a survey of the elements that are preserved, eliminated or added during the translation process shows Poggioli’s tendency to preserve the substantives of the source text (thus, its “objectual” landmarks) and to recombine them with elements aimed at creating references to the Italian poetic tradition. Particular attention is drawn to the references to Hermeticism, which are particularly evident in certain lexical, syntactical, and metrical choices.
