Based on the handwritten documents of the Vocationes illustres, the research explores the jesuit novitiate at Novellara during the age of Antonio Valentino, first rector and master of novices (1571-1579). The topic is focused on the spiritual relationship between Valentino and the countess Barbara Borromeo, wife of Camillo Gonzaga, who founded the novitiate in 1571. The essay underlines the role played by the archbishop of Milano, Carlo Borromeo, because of his relations with the Gonzaga family and with father Valentino too, and it clarifies some aspects regarding Federico Borromeo’s vocation to a jesuit life.
