When Seuils by Gérard Genette was published in 1987, scholars in various literary disciplines (including translation) started to pay attention to the paratextual reality surrounding texts.Batchelor’s book is both theoretical and practical in its conception: by exploring Genette’s theory on paratexts, she proposes three case studies (on translating Nietzsche into English; on Chinese reception of Western translation theory texts; and the case of Walter Presents in introducing foreign TV to the British audience) before defining a framework of paratextuality for research.
