This article intends to propose the memory of the Roma and Sinti genocide by the nazifascists as an instrument against the construction, the maintenance and the strengthening of antigypsyism (i.e. the specific form of racism against the Roma minority). In this context, the National Strategy for the Inclusion of Roma, Sinti and Travellers from 2012-2020 has included in its targets the introduction of the Porrajmos in the national school curriculum. After the reconstruction of the “paradoxe of visibility” and the “a-visuality” and the first studies on the Porrajmos in Italy, the multimedia guide “Giving Memory a Future, Roma and Sinti in Italy and around the World” is now being proposed. The guide has been developed, in Italian and English, by the Catholic University of the Sacred Hearth together with the USC Shoah Foundation Institute. This project is to be considered as a teaching tool intended to preserve and recover the memory of the Porrajmos and is based on the following steps: (1) subjective and personal experience, i.e. collection of people’s memories and testimonials (dimension of memory); (2) geotemporal contextualization of events (history); (3) analysis and evaluation of the parties involved as well as of the social mechanisms and the facts that have caused said events (critical dimension); (4) capacity to read, comprehend and project past historical events into the present and the future to actualize their significance, thus promoting a stronger commitment to human rights, tolerance and peace (political/civic dimension) in order to challenge and combat antigypsyism in Italy.
