ABSTRACT This paper discusses an approach to critical discourse analysis which I experienced by taking a sample text from a corpus1 which I collected to investigate how The Economist has covered the economic and financial issue of the euro from 1999 to 2012 in order to describe how verbal discourse is constructed in a British magazine. Since the main focus of this contribution is to discuss power and ideology as key features for the critical discourse analyst, I first refer to Fairclough’s approach to consider how language is used to produce social relations of power (1989:1); secondly, I apply Van Dijk’s research (1998, 2006) to enquire into the different ways in which discourse is expected to frame ideology.
