The monastic life – explored through the monks’eyes and, as to say, seen from the inside – was the perspective of the XXIII International Symposium of the IRCLAMA, whose acts were edited by Brepols. The meeting, through the study of the spaces and time of monastic observance, tried to penetrate in depth one of the fundamental structures of development of medieval society between East and West. History, art, architecture and archaeology are the key tools whereby – through the words said and written by the protagonists, the places of prayer, the work and daily life, the images and the buildings (church, cloister, capitular0, refectory, kitchen, library, scriptorium, dormitory, infirmary, garden, warehouses, guest house, etc.) to the last dwelling of the common or elitist graves in the cemetery – the forms of the small and great abbey complexes and their uses are examined, from the late antiquity to the magnificent cluniac bloom, such as formative archetypes of the medieval Christian Europe.
La vita monastica - esplorata con gli occhi dei monaci e, per così dire, vista dall’interno - è stata la prospettiva del XXIII Simposio Internazionale dell’IRCLAMA, i cui atti sono stati editi da Brepols. L’incontro, attraverso lo studio degli spazi e del tempo dell’osservanza monastica, ha cercato di penetrare in profondità una delle strutture fondamentali dello sviluppo della società medievale tra Oriente e Occidente. La storia, l’arte, l’architettura e l’archeologia sono gli strumenti chiave con cui - attraverso le parole dette e scritte dai protagonisti, i luoghi di preghiera, il lavoro e la vita quotidiana, le immagini e gli edifici (chiesa, chiostro, capitolo, refettorio, cucina, biblioteca, scriptorium, dormitorio, infermeria, giardino, magazzini, foresteria, ecc.) fino all’ultima dimora delle tombe (comuni o elitarie) nel cimitero - le forme dei complessi abbaziali piccoli e grandi e il loro uso vengono esaminati dalla tarda antichità alla magnifica fioritura cluniacense, quali archetipi formativi dell’Europa medievale cristiana.
