Stored product entomology, as a scientific discipline, was established a little later than some other specializations of applied entomology. Early important studies about the biology of insect pests of stored products were carried out by Giuseppe Salvatore Candura who began his research in Portici, near Naples, under the direction of Filippo Silvestri. Particular attention to stored product entomology was carried out at the University of Milan by prof. Minos Martelli and prof. Giorgio Domenichini.

Abstract

In this paper a brief review of the historical aspects of the foodstuff protection against insect pests has been undertaken. A first paper on Sitotroga cerealella was published in 1926. Later Candura published many other studies on the time of development of several species and also many other data about life cycles. Nowadays these papers are important reference points. After the second world war, many contributions were made by Gino Dal Monte who, between 1950 and 1990, published many scientific and divulgative papers. Particular attention to stored product entomology was carried out at the University of Milan by prof. Minos Martelli and prof. Giorgio Domenichini. In Milan the teaching of this new discipline was also initiated when, during the Academic Year 1973/74, the course of “Animal parasitology and foodstuff protection” was introduced. In the following years several courses with similar content were begun in many other Universities. Reference is also made to the work of prof. Giorgio Domenichini, who intensified his studies when he was transferred to Piacenza. The review also summarises the activities of Italian entomologists in several international working groups and the most important works published in Italy in the field of stored product entomology. In conclusion, the principal research activities carried out in Italian Universities and future prospects are considered
