We propose the concept of “core” generation – defined as population aged 20-39 – as a crucial driver of economic development. We show how this happened and point to the negative impact of the European crisis on births, which also dampens the generation “core” and the economic growth. We show that Germany, as well as Italy, has recorded a dramatic drop of the generation “core” since the mid-1990, which is a crucial root at the European crisis.

Abstract

We propose the concept of “core” generation – defined as population aged 20-39 – as a crucial driver of economic development. We show how this happened and point to the negative impact of the European crisis on births, which also dampens the generation “core” and the economic growth. We show that Germany, as well as Italy, has recorded a dramatic drop of the generation “core” since the mid-1990, which is a crucial root at the European crisis.
