The aim of this paper is to show the close relationship between theatre and ruling class in renaissance Florence through the analysis of some performative and dramatic texts. Sacred plays, farces and comedies of the beginning of XVI century, often written by public heralds, contained political and moral messages, derived from gnomic republican poetry, because they were intended as a sort of ‘civic acting’ used to educate citizens and to influence public opinion. Florentine example, although exceptional in European theatrical landscape for the richness of its sources and of its experiences, is methodologically significant because it underlines the need to study every kind of theatrical event and dramatic text in its specific contest of production, in order to explain the real meanings of its structure, content and staging. Only this kind of approach can justify why Machiavelli wrote an innovative and civilly committed comedy as the “Mandragola” and began to compose also a sacred play: because they were both considered as an expression of the political communication

Questo contributo si è soffermato sulle strette relazioni esistenti fra teatro e classe dirigente nella Firenze del rinascimento attraverso l’analisi di alcuni testi drammatici e performativi. Sacre rappresentazioni, farse e commedie del primo Cinquecento, spesso scritte dagli araldi della Signoria, contenevano messaggi politici e morali, ripresi dalla poesia gnomica repubblicana, perché erano considerate come una sorta di ‘recitazione civile’ impiegata per educare i cittadini e per influenzare la pubblica opinione. L’esempio di Firenze, sebbene eccezionale nel panorama teatrale europeo per la ricchezza delle sue fonti e delle sue esperienze, è metodologicamente significativo perché mette in luce la necessità di studiare ogni tipo di evento teatrale e di testo drammatico nel suo specifico contesto di produzione, per poter spiegare i veri significati della sua struttura, del suo contenuto e della sua messinscena. Solo un approccio di questo tipo può giustificare il motivo per cui Machiavelli scrisse una commedia innovativa e di impegno civile come la “Mandragola” e iniziò a comporre una sacra rappresentazione: perché entrambe erano considerate un’espressione della comunicazione politica
