Many studies have been made of the Romance adverbs formed from -mente, including some monographs. Here I intend to concentrate on the processes of semantic bleaching and grammaticalization, in order to explain why this lexeme rather than any other (such as e.g. modo) was chosen to form adverbs in Romance; and to consider together the various hypotheses that have been suggested hitherto.
