Among discourse markers of Russian language argumentative markers are of primary interest for the strategic role they play in the analysis of argumentative speech acts. The present article focuses on epistemic modal adverbials used in Russian as 'pokazateli argumentativnosti' and on the cues they can provide for the reconstruction of argumentative moves as well as for the individuation of argument strength. Implications at theoretical and methodological level are also discussed which the analysis of Russian argumentative markers seems to open to linguistic typology, to the acquisition of Russian as a second language and to translation studies.
