Brother Elijah played an important role at the beginning of the Order of the Lesser Brothers if only considering that Francis chose him as General Minister of the Order and his vicar. Frate Elia svolse un ruolo importante agli inizi dell'Ordine dei frati Minori se solo si considera che Francesco lo scelse come ministro generale dell'Ordine e suo vicario. Dopo la morte di Francesco Elia costituì un sicuro riferimento per Chiara e per le religiose che intendevano seguire l'esempio di Francesco, discostandosi dalle linee indicate dalla sede apostolica al nuovo Ordine monastico femminile da essa fondato ed entro il quale cercava anche di convogliare il monastero di S. Damiano. Allorché frate Elia cadde in disgrazia e si rifugiò presso Federico II, Chiara non poté più ricorrere al suo aiuto, ma i contatti tra Assisi e Cortona non si interruppero, come rivela la presenza di frate Angelo alla morte di frate Elia e, dopo pochi mesi, a quella di Chiara
