The need to popularise technical and scientific knowledge has contributed to the development of thematic dictionaries, method vocabularies, dictionaries of science and technology since the 18th century in France. After dealing with the history of the meaning of "art", the article examines one of the primary sources of terminology of this period, the" Dictionnaire de l'Industrie " by Henri Gabriel Duchesne, a collection of ancient knowledge of science and arts.
