Abstract

This article highlights the ethical-anthropological aspects of Medicine. It wishes to outline the notion that art can be very useful to gain knowledge since it adopts different approaches no less valid than those used in Sciences. The author uses art as a further support to the investigation of the relationships between humankind and sickness, humankind and disease. A particular significance is given to the patient/doctor relationship which has been analyzed in great details.. The article tries to bring to light the value and function of art vis-à-vis the ethical-anthropological concerns. Finally Art may be regarded as a cultural perspective and as guidelines for social and ethical keys of interpretation. It is not only an historical document, but also a seismograph, registering the fundamental historical movements and ethical dimensions of Medicine. The patient is, therefore, considered as a multidimensional biological and physical system in which each dimension is in strong interactions with all the others. The final picture is the result of a complex synthesis to which each specific dimension gives his specific and important contribution.
