After a first biographical sketch of the Benedictine scholar Marco Antonio Scipioni, the article focuses on the 'Vera ragione di stato praticata' (1650), Scipioni's only attempt to deal with political matters. Looking at this short writing, special attention is payed to the local background of wide spread interests in political thinking surrounding the abbey where Scipioni was living at thet time, and moreover to the tacitist tradition of scholarship developed in the Cassinese congregation throughout the 17th century, in wich also the 'Vera ragione di stato praticata' has surely to be included.
