The article illustrates current research carried out on the person and work of the italian priest and educator Don Lorenzo Milani (1923-1927), derived from the recent publication (Don Lorenzo Milani e la scuola della parola. Analisi storica e prospettive pedagogiche, Macerata, EUM, 2011)of the proceedings of an interdiscipinary conference held at Macerata University in 2007. The "school of the word" summarizes not only Don Milani's vision of education as a tool for social promotion and the fight for "the last ones" but, actually embodied the expectations - as well as the frustrated hope - of a social renewal wich had arisen powerfully in many Catholic enviroments after the birth of Republican Italy in 1948.

Abstract
