This paper, which also works as an introduction to the First Monday special issue "Waves, Bits & Bricks: Media and the Social Production of Urban Space" (18-11, Nov. 2013) reviews the state of the art of the studies on the relationship between media and urban settlements, and observes a shift towards a practice-based approach relying upon non-essentialist conceptualizations of "space" and "media".
