The role played by the Holy See during the Anschluss (March/April 1938) is highlighted in a twenty-one page brief written by Apostolic Nuncio Gaetano Cicognani, who returned to Rome after the removal of the Nuntiature in Vienna. Held in the historical archive of the Vatican Secretary of State, this document offers new elements for a better understanding of the behavior of archbishop cardinal Theodor Innitzer when facing the Nazi regime, and, in general, the difficult relationship between the Holy See and the Austrian episcopate.

Abstract
The role played by the Holy See during the Anschluss (March/April 1938) is highlighted in a twenty-one page brief written by Apostolic Nuncio Gaetano Cicognani, who returned to Rome after the removal of the Nuntiature in Vienna. Held in the historical archive of the Vatican Secretary of State, this document offers new elements for a better understanding of the behavior of archbishop cardinal Theodor Innitzer when facing the Nazi regime, and, in general, the difficult relationship between the Holy See and the Austrian episcopate.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
