The article provides a view of the large variety of methodologies available to the student of translation today. The question raised in this short survey is such a plurality is to be perceived as a sign of development or impending crisis. Is the apparent fragmentation of approaches leaving no space for anything but contingent speculation, strictly dependent on the material conditions in which translation takes place?
