The microcanonical dynamics of an ensemble of random magnetic dipoles in a needle has been investigated. Due to the presence of a constant of motion in the 1D case, a ‘dimensional’ phase transition in the quasi one-dimensional case has been found separating a paramagnetic chaotic phase from a ferromagnetic regular one. In particular, a simple criterion for the transition has been formulated and an intensive critical parameter found. Numerical simulations support our understanding of this complex phenomenon.

Abstract

The microcanonical dynamics of an ensemble of random magnetic dipoles in a needle has been investigated. Due to the presence of a constant of motion in the 1D case, a ‘dimensional’ phase transition in the quasi one-dimensional case has been found separating a paramagnetic chaotic phase from a ferromagnetic regular one. In particular, a simple criterion for the transition has been formulated and an intensive critical parameter found. Numerical simulations support our understanding of this complex phenomenon.
