This chapter examines the contribution of Media Literacy to the prevention and countering of hate speech, situating it at the intersection of Media Education, Intercultural Education, and Onlife Citizenship Education. Starting from processes of othering and targeting, it explores the mechanisms through which hate becomes normalized and socially accepted, considering the continuity between online and offline environments and the role of digital platforms. Particular attention is paid to co-authorship in the social web and the communicative responsibility of prosumers, who are called upon not only to critically interpret media content but also to recognize the consequences of their participatory practices. From an educational perspective, the chapter argues for integrating critical awareness with socio-affective dimensions, fostering empathy, reflexivity, and the transition from passive bystanding to active engagement. It then examines prevention and intervention strategies, including counter-speech, alternative speech, digital storytelling, and forms of digital activism. Particular emphasis is placed on Peer & Media Education as a participatory approach that promotes youth agency, communicative responsibility, and collaborative content creation, within a broader vision of onlife citizenship oriented towards social justice.

Abstract
Particular emphasis is placed on Peer & Media Education as a participatory approach that promotes youth agency, communicative responsibility, and collaborative content creation, within a broader vision of onlife citizenship oriented towards social justice.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
