This book collects the proceedings of the Brescia conference (October 22-24, 2025) dedicated to the management of health emergencies in modern and contemporary Italy. Through twenty specialized contributions, the text analyzes the intersection of political institutions, medical knowledge, and social dynamics when facing the major epidemic waves and endemic diseases that shaped the peninsula. The essays range from the 17th-century plague to 19th-century cholera, examining regional case studies including the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, the Papal States, Sicily, and the Kingdom of Naples. Central to the investigation are prevention strategies, the rollout of vaccination campaigns, the circulation of news, and the impact of sanitary borders. The work also delves into historical demography and artistic representations of illness, offering a valuable historiographical reflection that ideally dialogues with the legacy left by the recent Covid-19 global crisis.
