Between 1994 and 1996, 19 Catholic religious were killed in Algeria, during the so-called Black Decade. They include the monks of Tibhirine and the Bishop of Oran, Pierre Claverie. This article examines the historical context that led to armed confrontation between the jihadis and the military in Algeria. The martyrs' decision to remain in an increasingly violent environment is best explained as a choice of fidelity to the Algerian people, nourished by a decade-long practice of dialogue and Christian witness in an Islamic context.
