Viktor Vinogradov (1895-1969) was a philologist, linguist, and great expert of stylistics. A scholar with encyclopedic knowledge, he is little known to non-Slavists because his vast body of work is almost entirely in Russian. This volume is the first to present a substantial collection of significant essays that demonstrate the originality of his linguistic-literary and historical-stylistic analysis methods, as well as his pioneering insights, which have often been adopted and developed by other schools in subsequent periods. The studies presented here concern major Russian classics such as Achmatova, Dostoevsky, Pushkin, and Gogol'; significant topics in the history of the Russian language, such as Avvakum's style; and purely linguistic investigations, such as those on modal words and lexical combinations, as well as lexicological studies. In these works, Vinogradov engages in an incessant dialogue not only with Russian formalists, but also with Western scholars such as Sechehaye, Bally, Ries, and Croce. The collection concludes with an archive section containing extracts from his correspondence with his wife, Nadežda Malyševa, and from his memoirs.
