This volume is the result of the work of over 30 scholars. It aims to draw attention – amidst today’s tragic climate – to Russian literary development, that is deeply intertwined with twentieth-century political history, both within and outside the USSR. After 1917, Russian-language literature developed along three distinct strands: official literature, which was heavily influenced by the authorities through censorship; underground literature, free from censorship; and, finally, literature produced abroad, amidst the difficult circumstances of emigration (which are now recurring). The events following the dissolution of the USSR in 1991 have led us to re-examine some of the critical perspectives established in the past and to attempt to offer an initial insight into the events and phenomena of the decades closest to us.
