This article examines the persecution of the Rohingya in Myanmar as a process shaped by forced migration, ethnic cleansing, and organised state violence. Focusing on the 2017 attacks in northern Rakhine, it argues that the mass atrocities committed against Rohingya civilians were not merely a disproportionate response to insurgent activity, but part of a broader pattern of systematic oppression. Drawing on international reports, witness testimonies, and satellite imagery, the article analyses the destruction of Rohingya villages, the large-scale displacement of civilians, and the operational role of military units implicated in the violence. It further considers whether the scale, coordination, and methods of the attacks point to planning at the highest levels of command. The article contends that the violence in northern Rakhine must be understood not only as a humanitarian catastrophe, but also as a politically structured project of removal and erasure
