This essay explores the evolving relationship between state and citizen in Canovist Res- toration Spain, focusing on the intellectual debate as reflected in most important cul- tural reviews. The necessities of the emerging modern Spanish society and its insertion into the networks of the imperial global economy fostered a statist, centralist vision, gradually marginalizing more participatory and civic-oriented views of citizenship. This issue echoed broader European patterns and subtly anticipated the more explicit re- configuration that, as historiography has shown, emerged after the Desastre of 1898.

Abstract
This essay explores the evolving relationship between state and citizen in Canovist Res- toration Spain, focusing on the intellectual debate as reflected in most important cul- tural reviews. The necessities of the emerging modern Spanish society and its insertion into the networks of the imperial global economy fostered a statist, centralist vision, gradually marginalizing more participatory and civic-oriented views of citizenship. This issue echoed broader European patterns and subtly anticipated the more explicit re- configuration that, as historiography has shown, emerged after the Desastre of 1898.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
