The musical patronage of the Sfondrati family is well known regarding Cremona and the figure of Nicolò Sfondrati, bishop of the city for three decades (1560-90) and pope for ten months (1590-91). Less known is the action of his brother, Paolo Sfondrati, baron of Valassina and Philip II’s ambassador to the Savoy court of Charles Emmanuel I (1580-87). Likewise, little attention has been paid to the patronage of the baron’s sons, especially Agata, born Barbara, prioress of the Milanese monastery of San Paolo Converso. The essay reconstructs these relationships within a topography that extends far beyond the borders of Cremona along multiple geographical and cultural directions.

Abstract
The musical patronage of the Sfondrati family is well known regarding Cremona and the figure of Nicolò Sfondrati, bishop of the city for three decades (1560-90) and pope for ten months (1590-91). Less known is the action of his brother, Paolo Sfondrati, baron of Valassina and Philip II’s ambassador to the Savoy court of Charles Emmanuel I (1580-87). Likewise, little attention has been paid to the patronage of the baron’s sons, especially Agata, born Barbara, prioress of the Milanese monastery of San Paolo Converso. The essay reconstructs these relationships within a topography that extends far beyond the borders of Cremona along multiple geographical and cultural directions.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
