Mare e navigazione nell’immaginario simbolico e letterario della Grecia antica

The sea is omnipresent in ancient Greek literature. From ἅλς to πέλαγος, from θάλασσα to πόντος, and extending to λαῖτμα, the Greek lexicon features a rich variety of terms to designate the sea, each carrying distinct semantic nuances and cultural connotations. This article first examines the lexical and semantic dimensions of these Greek maritime terms. It then analyzes the inherent ambivalence and duality with which the sea is depicted across literary genres, from Homeric epic to the Hellenistic period, with a particular focus on its metaphorical significance.

Il mare è onnipresente nella letteratura greca antica. Da ἅλς a πέλαγος, da θάλασσα a πόντος fino a λαῖτμα, la lingua greca conosce più termini per definire il mare, in modo da descriverne variegate accezioni e sfumature. L’articolo dapprima affronta l’aspetto lessicale e semantico dei termini che nella lingua greca indicano il mare; passa poi ad analizzare gli aspetti di ambivalenza e duplicità con cui il mare è rappresentato in letteratura, dall’epica omerica fino al periodo ellenistico, con particolare attenzione all’aspetto metaforico.
