Based on unpublished handwritten documents, the essay reconstructs the biographical and intellectual profile of the noblewoman Aurelia d’Este Gambacorta (1682-1719), Duchess of Limatola. Born in San Martino in Rio, educated in the convent of San Paolo Converso in Milan, and moved to Naples after her marriage with Francesco Gambacorta, Aurelia, in agreement with the philosopher Paolo Mattia Doria, created a modern salon, at the forefront of the dissemination of pre-Enlightenment French culture. The essay concern with the important role played in the social, political, and cultural life of the Neapolitan city during the years of Habsburg government. Particular attention is paid to her patronage of music and the arts, which gave the duchess public visibility.
