“Order” considered as a basic ontological term exhibits a manyfold meaning. Following the Aristotelian praxis of disambiguating linguistic terms by grasping their experiential implications, Eric Voegelin displayed in the New Science of Politics a critique of Positivistic attempts to get rid of the “order” derived from philosophical anthropology as part of a general ontology. Then, in Order and History, he considers the main historical types of political order and asks if they can be questioned by means of the philosophical-Platonic anthropological principle of the order of the soul.

Abstract

“Order” considered as a basic ontological term exhibits a manyfold meaning. Following the Aristotelian praxis of disambiguating linguistic terms by grasping their experiential implications, Eric Voegelin displayed in the New Science of Politics a critique of Positivistic attempts to get rid of the “order” derived from philosophical anthropology as part of a general ontology. Then, in Order and History, he considers the main historical types of political order and asks if they can be questioned by means of the philosophical-Platonic anthropological principle of the order of the soul.
