The article examines the relationship between Cicero and Trebatius Testa, a jurist symbolic of jurisprudential change in the 1st century BC. Letters addressed to him outline the course of Trebatius’ education, supported by Cicero and later accepted into the Caesarian consilium in Gaul. These epistles constitute a valuable source for the numerous references to Roman law well known to the two correspondents, including: syngraphae; ex iure manum consertum vocare; vis ac deductio moribus; exception quod tu prior vi hominibus armatis; tresviri capitales et monetales; formula fiduciae; actio communi dividundo; ius iurandum. The frequent mottos make it possible, moreover, to reconstruct a web of expressions, vocabulary and ways of thinking proper to jurisprudential practice, which Cicero knew and ironically parodied.
