The rise of machine translation has radically reshaped the professional translation sector. Machine translation tools produce a first translation of increasingly convincing quality, whereas specialists can now focus on the most complex aspects of the text, particularly its lexical and terminological dimensions. As part of the project Lingua-Q: AI and post-editing for multilingual and specialised translation, a team of the Osservatorio di Terminologie e Politiche Linguistiche – OTPL (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan) analyses the quality of machine translation from a pedagogical perspective, with the aim of developing post-editing training for students of linguistic sciences and foreign languages, literatures, and cultures. This study consists of three main phases: 1) the analysis of the results of a questionnaire administered to a group of master’s students to identify their expectations and training needs in translation and post-editing; 2) the compilation of a corpus of French texts in the field of sustainable and ethical finance translated using machine translation tools: the quality of the translations was considered to prepare the teaching materials; 3) the implementation of a teaching sequence to encourage the responsible use of machine translation tools. The results of this study highlight the importance of specific training in post-editing, which is now considered an essential skill for language specialists.
