The paper concerns the episode of Militia of the Holy Land, held in the margins of the Arabi-Israeli war during the summer of 1948. Being that, the Holy Places were in danger, in some catholic circles the idea of sending a volunteers’ campaign arose, this was in order to defend Christian’s sanctuaries. All proposals put forward by the Order of Malta, the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher and the Roman delegation of the Holy Land, failed. None of the planned expeditions were realized. Nevertheless, these episodes, and in particular the Franciscan Militia, drew the attention of the international press and diplomats. Disavowed by the Vatican and the order of Minors and disapproved by Western diplomats, the militia was not followed. This, despite the great success among the faith community and public opinion and showed that the idea, which linked the issue of protection of shrines to an Italian involvement in the region, was able to collect considerable acclaim. Taking into account the outcomes of this episode, it seems it was a focal point in order to value how the Italian Catholic world faced Israel’s birth and the ending of the European influence in the Middle East
