This study examines the role of phraseology in the preservation of old and archaic words. The analysis focuses on 129 lexical units – old, archaic words, words that have been subjected to a shift in meaning – extracted manually from Le Robert, Dictionnaire des expressions et locutions (2003). The objective is to demonstrate that, in most cases, these lexical units constitute fixed expressions that are still used regularly; this contributes to the preservation of a rich lexical and cultural heritage. For the analysis a corpus of contemporary French, FrTenTen23, is exploited.

Abstract

This study examines the role of phraseology in the preservation of old and archaic words. The analysis focuses on 129 lexical units – old, archaic words, words that have been subjected to a shift in meaning – extracted manually from Le Robert, Dictionnaire des expressions et locutions (2003). The objective is to demonstrate that, in most cases, these lexical units constitute fixed expressions that are still used regularly; this contributes to the preservation of a rich lexical and cultural heritage. For the analysis a corpus of contemporary French, FrTenTen23, is exploited.
