Abstract

Discussion of the hypothesis of Theodore V. Buttrey: in Horace, Odes 1, 3 we have an instance of the phenomenon of halved coins when Virgil is described as the half of his friend’s soul. But in two poetical texts very close to the Horatian verses, there is no trace of dimidium in the sense of “halved coins” and Horatian usage could be explained through the Greek texts to which it alludes.
