Certification can be considered as a means of communicating sustainability. Its value lies in the use of correct, precise, and rigorous terminology, enabling goods to be reliably labelled, thus providing the user/consumer with a risk­free purchasing experience. In the leather industry, accurate and transparent labelling is even more important due to the prevalence of misleading terms associated with leather products. To better convey the characteristics of these products to consumers, including those related to sustainability, terminological transparency must mark product communication throughout the production chain. Within this framework, our contribution aims to analyse the terms that relate to sustainability, focusing on the conceptual manipulation that affect some of them. The final terminology product will then promote knowledge about sustainability in the leather industry and safeguard consumers against misleading product claims.

Abstract

Certification can be considered as a means of communicating sustainability. In the leather industry, accurate and transparent labelling is even more important due to the prevalence of misleading terms associated with leather products.
