The authors propose a reflection on the quantitative and qualitative occurrences of the consonant 'r' in French. The large number of different realisations attested in contemporary French, which is enriched by the great variety of languages and accents which characterise our multicultural society, nourishes the phonological repertoire of linguists and writers, and also that of inexpert speakers. Teachers of French as a Foreign Language are often characterised by a purist and prescriptive attitude, whereas learning pronunciation, particularly the 'r', can be a source of pleasure and fun.Variation in voicing can carry an informative function, but it can also play a merely decorative or ludic part. Writers, singers, comics and actors belonging to the French-speaking world are called to take part in this pleasurable exercise.

Abstract: | The authors propose a reflection on the quantitative and qualitative occurrences of the consonant 'r' in French. |
