The paper aims to map out the historiographical approach to German Catholicism starting with the renewed status of Catholics in the Bundesrepublik and the foundation of the Kommission für Zeitgeschichte as a academic organisation pursuing research on German Catholicism. It analyses the current methodological and conceptual reflections on the social configuration of Catholicism in the public space and suggests some research hypotheses.
