A relatively little explored page in the history of aviation during the interwar period from a transnational perspective consists of the attempts that throughout the 1920s saw Portuguese, Spanish, Brazilian, Italian, Uruguayan and French aviators try to connect Europe and South America by air. This essay aims to provide an interpretation of the issue by focusing on four intercontinental flights in particular: Lisbon-Rio de Janeiro by Gago Coutinho and Artur Freire de Sacadura Cabral in 1922; Palos-Buenos Aires by Ramón Franco Bahamonde, Julio Ruiz de Alda, Juan Manuel Durán and Pablo Rada Ustárroz in 1926; Elmas-Natal, or the first part of the four continents flight by Francesco De Pinedo, Carlo Del Prete and Vitale Zacchetti in 1927; Montecelio-Touros by Arturo Ferrarin and Carlo Del Prete in 1928.

Abstract
A relatively little explored page in the history of aviation during the interwar period from a transnational perspective consists of the attempts that throughout the 1920s saw Portuguese, Spanish, Brazilian, Italian, Uruguayan and French aviators try to connect Europe and South America by air.
